O Jardim Botânico esta localizado na zona sul do Rio de janeiro.
Uma das mais bonitas e preservadas áreas verdes da Cidade, é um exemplo da diversidade da Flora Brasileira. Lá pode-se observar 6.500 espécies distribuidas numa area de 54 hectares e também monumentos históricos, artísticos e arqueológicos, além de um importante centro de pesquisa que inclui a mais importante biblioteca especializada em botânica do Brasil com mais de 32.000 livros !
o Jardim Botânico foi fundado em 1808 por D. João VI, o Rei de Portugal. Originariamente servia para aclimatação de espécies vindas do oeste da Índia como castanhas, pimentas e canela. O jardim foi aberto ao público em 1822 e funciona diariamente até hoje, exceto nos feriados de natal e ano novo.
Todo o parque esta localizado na base do Morro do Corcovado, onde está o Cristo Redentor e tem uma área de 140 hectares e contêm mais de 6000 diferentes espécies de árvores e plantas tropicais e subtropicais, incluindo 900 espécies de palmeiras. Uma linha de 750m e 134 palmeiras formam na entrada do parque a Avenida das Palmeiras Imperiais. Estas palmeiras são descendentes de uma única palmeira, conhecida como a "palmeira mãe" destruidas a vários anos por um raio.
Somente 40% do parque são cultiváveis, o restante é uma reserva de mata atlântica ao redor do Corcovado.
O Parque é protegido pelo Patrimônio Histórico e Artístico Nacional e foi declarado em 1992 pela UNESCO como Reserva Natural da Biosfera.
The Rio de Janeiro Botanical Garden or Jardim Botânico is located at the Jardim Botânico district in the "Zona Sul" (South Zone) of Rio de Janeiro.

It was founded in 1808 by John VI of Portugal. Originally intended for the acclimatisation of spices like nutmeg, pepper and cinnamon imported from the West Indies, the Garden was opened to the public in 1822, and is now open during daylight hours every day except 25 December and 1 January.
The 140-hectare park lies at the foot of the Corcovado Mountain, far below the right arm of the statue of Christ the Redeemer and contains more than 6,000 different species of tropical and subtropical plants and trees, including 900 varieties of palm trees. A 750 m line of 134 palms forms the Avenue of Royal Palms leads from the entrance into the gardens. These palms are descended from a single tree, the Palma Mater, long since destroyed by lightning. Only about 40% of the park is cultivated, the remainder being Atlantic Forest rising up the slopes of Corcovado. The park is protected by the Patrimônio Histórico e Artístico Nacional and was designated as a biosphere reserve by UNESCO in 1992.
